Vibration Test Setup and Procedure for Electrodynamic Vibration Shakers

Vibration Test Setup and Procedure for Electrodynamic Vibration Shakers

2025-04-23

At Dongguan Precision Test Equipment Co., Ltd., we understand that accurate and reliable vibration testing hinges on a well-executed setup and procedure. This blog post will guide you through the essential steps for preparing and operating your electrodynamic vibration test system, along with crucial considerations to ensure optimal results.

01. Vibration Test System Operation Procedure

1. Preparation: Laying the Groundwork for a Successful Test

Before powering up your electrodynamic vibration test system, meticulous preparation is key. Ensure the following checks are completed:

(1) Environmental Check: Verify that the temperature and humidity within the equipment room are within the normal operating range specified for your system and the test requirements. Complex environmental conditions might necessitate specific considerations.

(2) Main Power Check: Confirm that the main power switch (typically a 380V circuit breaker) supplying the system is in the “OFF”  position before you intend to power on, and in the “ON”  position when preparing to start.

(3) Grounding Verification: Double-check that the vibration test system is properly grounded. A secure ground connection is crucial for safety and accurate measurements.

(4) Isolation and Alignment: Inspect the vibration table's isolation air springs to ensure they are adequately inflated. Verify that the armature (moving coil) is correctly centered within the magnetic field. Proper isolation minimizes external vibrations, and correct centering ensures optimal performance.

(5) Sensor Connections: Ensure that the connection cables between the vibration table's accelerometer (sensor) and the vibration controller are securely fastened at both ends. Loose connections can lead to inaccurate data or signal loss.

(6) Amplifier Connections: Check that the BNC cables connecting the power amplifier to the vibration controller are firmly attached. These connections transmit the amplified drive signal to the shaker.

(7) Table Attachment Security: If using an expansion head or slip table for horizontal vibration, meticulously verify that all connecting bolts are tightly secured. Loose attachments can introduce unwanted resonances or safety hazards.

(8) Specimen and Fixture Mounting: Confirm that the test specimen is securely fastened to the appropriate test fixture, and that the fixture is firmly attached to the vibration table. Use the correct mounting hardware and ensure proper torque according to specifications.

2. Powering Up and Running the Test: Bringing the System to Life

Once the preparation steps are complete, proceed with the power-on sequence:

(1) Software Setup: * Double-click the shortcut icon for your vibration control software on the desktop to open the program interface. * Select the desired test profile or create a new one. * Navigate through the software menus to configure channel parameters (sensor inputs), limit parameters (safety thresholds), engineering units, the target test spectrum (for random and shock tests), and the test schedule (for swept sine or programmed tests). Ensure all parameters align with your test specification.

(2) Power Amplifier Activation: * Turn on the power switch of the power amplifier. * Wait for the display to show "Checking OK." * Press the "START" button on the amplifier. The "power" and "cooling" LEDs should illuminate, and the cooling fan should begin operating. * Allow approximately 40 seconds for the amplifier to fully initialize. The "ready" LED will light up when the amplifier is operating normally. * Important Precautions: Do not adjust the gain knob on the amplifier before the "ready" LED is lit. Avoid pressing the emergency stop button unless it's a genuine emergency. Once the "ready" LED is on, the power amplifier is functioning correctly.

(3) Running the Test: * Slowly rotate the gain knob on the power amplifier clockwise, typically to about two-thirds of its full range for normal operation. For test levels exceeding 80% of the system's capacity, the gain knob might need to be turned fully clockwise. The gain control adjusts the output level of the amplifier. * Click the "Start Run" button within the vibration control software to initiate the test sequence according to your configured parameters. The vibration table will now begin to move.

3. Shutting Down the System: Ensuring Safe and Orderly Conclusion

After the test is complete, follow this shutdown procedure carefully:

  • Software Termination: First, stop the test run within the vibration control software.
  • Gain Reduction: Slowly rotate the gain knob on the power amplifier counter-clockwise all the way to its minimum position (fully closed). This reduces the output to zero.
  • Amplifier Stop: Press the "STOP" button on the power amplifier. The drive signal to the shaker will cease.
  • Cooling Period: Allow the cooling fan on the power amplifier and shaker to continue running for a period after the test. This allows the system to dissipate any residual heat. Wait until the fan automatically stops before proceeding.
  • Main Power Disconnection: Finally, and crucially, turn off the main power switch (380V circuit breaker) to the "OFF"  position.
  • Supervision Requirement: Never leave the equipment room while the main power to the vibration test system is still on. A trained operator must be present at all times when the system is energized. Only after the main power is safely disconnected can personnel leave the area.

By adhering to these detailed setup and operational procedures, you can ensure the safety of personnel and equipment, and obtain accurate and reliable results from your electrodynamic vibration test system. At Dongguan Precision, we are committed to providing you with the tools and knowledge for successful vibration testing. Always refer to your specific system's operation manual for detailed instructions and safety guidelines.
